Officials

Have you ever been curious about what the team of white shirts around the pool during swim meets are doing? What is their purpose?

Those are our officials, we can not run swim meets without these certified officials! They make sure all starts, strokes, turns, relays and more are legal under NWAL rules. They work hard to insure the meet runs without a hitch and they have a blast watching your kids swim.

What does it take to become a Certified Official?

- Just attending the required classes (usually on the same day with multiple opportunities during April) and passing the certification exam.

How much does it cost?

- Free! Other than a background check ($18), there are no fees to attend classes and take the exams.

What type of Official are we looking for?

- We are always in need of more Stroke and Turn Officials and Starters. If you have not been certified in the past, some positions require time in grade as other officials. For example you can't be a starter without one year of experience as a stroke and turn official.

How many officials do we need?

- As many as possible. The more officials we have the more often we can relieve other officials from the summer heat!

Why have officials?

- Officials help provide fair and equal setting for competition and keep meet moving along smoothly and quickly.

So how do I sign up?

Your first step is to create an account on NWAL Certified (click the link below and then Create An Account).

http://www.nwalcertified.org

Once you have created an account, login and go to the Class Sign Up page which is a tab at the top of the page. It will only show the classes that are available to you given your current level of certification. And Join a class - it's that simple. Further instruction will follow on the day of the class including your examination and provisional status.

If you would like more information on getting a poolside view of all events as a new official please email our Team Rep Christy McCarthy at [email protected].
