Swim Meet Etiquette
- Swimmers should be checked in at least 15 minutes before their warm-up time.
- Volunteers should check in at the volunteer table in the morning so the Volunteer coordinator knows you are there. Even if you don’t have a shift until later in the day, this will help ensure we have all volunteer positions filled.
- If you signed up for a timer position, make sure you attend the timers meeting before the meet starts. Each pool and team is different so it’s important to know how they operate.
- All teams are guests of the neighborhood HOA be sure to follow any parking instructions sent out before the meet. We do not want to upset anyone's HOA..
- When swimmers are lined up on the blocks for the start, keep noise and cheering to a minimum. Swimmers need to be able to hear the officials' calls, whistles, and start buzzer when standing on the blocks. When there is excessive noise, it can make it harder for them to listen for those cues and could cause a delayed start. Once the swimmers are in the water, get loud!!
**No photography or digital recording is allowed in the restricted area behind the starting blocks. Violation may result in expulsion from the meet at the discretion of the meet referee. This is for the privacy and protection of our swimmers while they are in a vulnerable position. **
- Do not approach working officials during the meet, if you have an issue find a board member. Only the Team Rep can dispute any calls made by an official.
- Do not go into restricted areas. Each pool will have some restricted areas during the meet.
- The ready bench area and the deck immediately around the pool are usually roped off. Coaches, assistants and/or spectators shall not be allowed in the starting, turn, finish areas, or ready bench area (from NWAL Rulebook). Only volunteers for those areas are allowed.
- Do not enter the computer room or approach the computer tables during the meet. The people at these tables are busy running the swim meet and ensuring the accuracy of the swim times and overall results. Again only volunteers for those areas are allowed during the meet.
- Some meets may restrict access to pool chairs/tables, playgrounds, baby pools or splashpads, as well. Please keep out of those areas during the meet. That is often done at the request of the HOA and can get the team in trouble if it is not enforced.
- Each team will have designated team/family set up areas, that is usually communicated ahead of time. Be sure you are setting up ONLY in those areas.
- Pick up your trash and any trash around you when we are done. Let’s leave our space cleaner than what we found it.
Every swim team earns a reputation, every family contributes to that reputation. Remember everyone is a volunteer and we are there to support the kids. Above all respect and good sportsmanship will carry us through!
